Godard is being misquoted…
New space and new time should be enough for original creation. Devouring Art is curiosity. Even if we would admit that nothing is original we shouldn’t say it out loud. Have faith in creation. I don’t really enjoy quoting, I believe it weakens the speech… but here is one that might enlighten.
“Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, it’s unlikely you will step up and take responsibility for making it so. If you assume that there’s no hope, you guarantee that there will be no hope. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, there are opportunities to change things, there’s a chance you may contribute to making a better world. The choice is yours.”
Noam Chomsky
“I like to feel a little like Columbus; in every new scene, I want to discover America. And I don’t want to hear about those goddamn vikings.” -Orson Welles
this is so true. All ideas are basically stolen. Even if you have a thought that you think is original, it’s not because it came from somewhere or was inspired by something. All ideas are spawned from another idea and changed and progressed into what it becomes.
“The nothing is original” statement was one that my design teacher made to my class back in 1981. It has stuck with me throughout my career and I love to repeat it with young enthusiastic designers I meet.
Sorry I dont agree. You must know what to do with your inspiration. You can completely lift a thing or have your interpretation of it. There in lies the character of the artist.
Hello everyone. When I created this image I had no intentions (my intentions were just to share the quote) of creating prints nor did I expect everyone to appreciate it as much as everyone has.
It’s amazing how quickly this virally spread around the internet but I’m not surprised that most bloggers identify with this quote just because it pretty much sums up the post-modern culture we currently live in.
I’m really just glad that it DID spread, and that it resonated with people, as opposed to receiving credit for it. If anything, the quote pretty much gives anyone who posts this clearance to NOT credit the artist :)
If you want prints, I will figure out a way to get this printed since enough of you have been emailing me for some. Email me if you are interested.
It’s nice to see Jarmusch, a fellow Akron native, showcased in this fashion – and I have to admit I’m as guilty as sin when it comes to this selective thievery. BTW I think your site is a great source of design inspiration…but with a name like Schweitzer, I suppose the appeal is natural…
If no one ever had an original thought, we would all still be thinking the first thought, over and over again, right? But you must have already thouht of that!

Ackk! He says it so well it hurts! Originality is a myth and a trick of irresponsible capitalism (IMO). Great find.

Well put!

They never want to believe that its true.
I just smile.

Thievery is punishable. Creativity is also. Combine the two into something recognizable and the punishment should be dully given.
Create your own art. Use what you experience for inspiration. Inspire others. Originality is not dead unless you let it die.

Clearly Jim Jarmusch hasn’t read Ayn Rand.

Although I don’t agree with it entirely, it’s still a great quote and generalizes the art world well. Great design and thanks for sharing, Mark.
