Unfortunately color doesn’t always work as it depends on the type of Avocado (yes there are different types). Reed avocados for example remain green even when ripe.
There is only one way of telling if an avocado is ripe and that’s by holding it in the palm of your hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. It if feels soft, not squishy it’s ripe.

A great idea, but you can’t judge an avocado by colour alone,

Try to give the stalk a wiggle. If moves freely, then it’s ripe
