In early August, the medical supplies and drug firm Johnson & Johnson sued the American Red Cross over the right to use the red-cross emblem. Most of us had assumed that the red cross, seen on ambulances and first-aid kits, was a universal symbol of succor to the suffering. But like any graphic symbol, the red cross turns out to have more meanings and more history than would at first appear. And the rights to use this symbol are equally complicated—a reminder that many graphic symbols have more complex stories than we expect.

Psychologist Dan Gilbert challenges the idea that we’ll be miserable if we don’t get what we want. Our “psychological immune system” lets us feel real, enduring happiness, he says, even when things don’t go as planned. He calls this kind of happiness “synthetic happiness,” and he says it’s “every bit as real and enduring as the kind of happiness you stumble upon when you get exactly what you were aiming for.”
Why are we happy? Why aren’t we happy?

Computed visualization, by Greg Fraser, based on data found in digital images: The rgb-value from every pixel found in an image is read and stored. The collected information is visualized by mapping the three values of red, green and blue on to the x, y and z-axis, thus placing a particular color-value into a 3dimensional space. Dependent on the amount of pixels sharing the same rgb-value, a box is drawn at that location, it’s size representing the quantity.

Paper or plastic? In light of the Alternate Use Material (AUM) Shopper, “neither” might be an even better answer. Breathing new life into old sailboat sails, this all-weather, all-purpose shopper transforms a distinctive yet durable material into a long-lasting, limited edition bag that retains the marks of its nautical origins.

The burning navigation rollovers on this site had me laugh out loud.
I agree with BB: I shall print and hang. And perhaps, periodically, put a name on the head of cauliflower. In pencil so I can change it depending on my mood.
