I am friends with a priest who works in some rough neighborhoods in Santiago, Chile. One time last year, when he was walking home late at night and listening to music, two men approached him and demanded his MP3 player. He pulled out his beat-up Walkman from his pocket and the two muggers were disgusted. They didn’t take it and they just walked away.
So it sounds like the strategy might work, although my friend’s cassette player was much less cool looking than the nice red one pictured in this post.
I can believe this person trashed a perfectly good walkman to make a case for a crappy disposable ipod., just to make some sort of hipster statement.
It makes me maaaaaad! :)
This is a really good idea. Thieves will never try to steal something like a Walkman, that’s below their level… Too bad it has come so far that you have to hide your belongings so people won’t steal them. Anyways, you keep up the good work, I like the design very much! Too bad you can’t control the Ipod without opening the lid. Anyhow, great job ;)

Are you talking about society or the Walkman? That Walkman had probably been around since the cold war and one day it got gutted to hold an Ipod that will be obsolete in about a month when a slightly smaller one comes out. Its like sending an old Triple Crown winner to the glue factory because you need glue to rhinestone up your dungaree jacket.

As a thief, I’d recognise the white earbuds anywhere.

Even better, who carries around an actual tape-playing Walkman any more? I’d target those as much as a regular iPod.

It’s a good concept though.

Of course, I know a good deal of people who use Ipod headphones regardless of the device it’s plugged in to.
