You just missed one! There was a balancing elephant sculpture by another artist (Miquel Barcelo) in Union Square from fall 2011 through spring 2012. My Modern Met featured it here (http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/amazing-gravity-defying-elephant-in-union-square) and I walked by it frequently on my way to work. It was very cool!
I can only imagine how stunning a sculpture like this would look in a gallery or museum, as you have illustrated above.
