StrollAway

Strollaway1

The StrollAway is an over-the-door hanger on steroids. Adjustable to nine positions, it will securely grab most strollers–even double ones! When you don’t need it, fold it flush to the door. Genius!

Teach your kid about ‘volume’ early.

Ha7170

This inventive box is perfect for teaching children about an important mathematical concept: volume. Each side of the three-sided box cut out is lined with grids, so that children can measure the volume of items by counting the boxes. As aesthetically pleasing as it is educational, the box comes with a stand to display the cut out, almost like a piece of art.

365 penguins

365penguins

I picked up 365 Penguins by Jean-Luc Fromental, at the MoMA store on saturday and found myself laughing out loud while reading it to our little Ella.

This hilarious, oversize picture book integrates challenging math concepts and environmental concerns into a clever narrative. On New Year’s Day, a family receives an anonymous package containing a penguin. The young narrator chases the bird around the house as it runs amok and knocks over lamps and furniture. His sister, Amy, finds a note, I’m number 1. Feed me when I’m hungry. Just as the message implies, there are more to come; by the end of the year, 365 in all. Penguins, penguins everywhere. As they arrive, readers must recall the number of days in each month–by the end of February, they are calculating the number of penguins in all. Then Father decides to organize them, first into four groups of 15, later in boxes by the dozen, and, finally, into a cubic formation. By summer, the heat, noise, and smell are unbearable. On New Year’s Eve, ecologist Uncle Victor arrives and the mystery is solved. The engaging story is illustrated in a flat retro design with a palette dominated by orange, blue, gray, and black and white. The comical birds watch TV, dance with their teenage sister, and eat everything in sight. The text provides endless opportunities for word problems, and units on penguins and global warming will never be the same.

workshop about art and space

Picture_2

Jordi Ferreiro designs and leads workshops for kids to make art in and about space. He sets them free with rolls of colored tape, the same he uses in his own work. About his workshop at the Centre d’art La Panera in Lleida, near Barcelona, Jordi says:

“The kids was freaking out because they never have ABSOLUTLEY FREEDOM for drawing in the space, without paper and with the 3D possibility. They starting making really small rubbertape drawing, and later was have been constructing houses, spiderwebs… really really cool!”

arty party

Picture_2

Turn those backyard burgers into masterpieces with Arty Party, the fine-art paper plates. These 8 1/2” x 10” dinner plates are realistically molded from thick, coated paperstock…so bring on your your barbecue brush strokes, your pudding pointillism, or your pasta imposto – they can handle it! And oh yes, then go and try to teach your kid again that you’re not really allowed to play with your food.

swissmiss loves See Kai Run.

Our little Ella Joy LOVES (!!) her See Kai Run – Fiona Boots. They must be quite comfy as they are made out of supersoft leather. She can easily put them on and take them off herself and they look just so cute. People constantly point them out when she wears them. She now proudly points to them whenever we are talking to someone. If there’s such a thing as being in love with a kids shoe brand, See Kai Run is it for me and Ella.

Tub Trugs: fantastic plastic!

Picture_15

I was so excited to re-discover Tub Trugs in today’s Apartment Therapy email. I’ve seen them before, at my friend Kate’s house and loved them, especially for toy storage!

Tub Trugs are awesome flexible plastic storage bins that were designed for outdoor use, but are great and just as perfect for home use. They start at around $8 each for the small size and go up to medium, large, extra large and shallow.

Buy the orange ones at the AT store. Or the entire selection at Plastica.

CYBEX i.GO | carry your baby in a horizontal position

Picture_5

Now this baby carrier had me look: The Cybex I.GO let’s you carry your baby in a horizontal postion during the first four months, which is what most european pediatricians recommend. Afterwards, parents can transport their child in the I-GO in a vertical position up to an age of approximately 1 year – while baby is either facing the parent or later enjoying a free view ahead.

my new favorite designy gift for little ones: Alexander Girard Alphabet Blocks

Alphabetblocks

I was pretty much speechless when I opened a package I received from House Industries last night. Inside I discovered the stunningly beautiful Alexander Girard Alphabet Blocks. They have been created by House Industries in a collaboration with the estate of reknowned mid-century designer Alexander Girard. The 28 wood blocks feature alphabets based on the forthcoming Alexander Girard font collection and a cleverly-adapted House Industries factory logo puzzle.

Alexander Girard (1907-1993) was a design virtuoso whose work ranged from the incredibly comprehensive and unforgettable Braniff Airways identity to high-profile restaurant designs such as New York’s La Fonda del Sol. A longtime textile designer for Herman Miller, Girard’s work created a powerful artistic statement that is still having a profound effect on interior and exterior architectural environments today.

We are now proudly displaying these blocks in our living room. They are simply too beautiful to be tucked away on one of Ella’s bookshelves. This is definitely my favorite new gift for the designy parent, uhm, I meant the KID of a designy parent.

Thank you Andy!

Melissa & Doug Magnetic Fishing Game

We got our little Ella the Melissa & Doug Magnetic Fishing Game and she is loving it. First thing in the morning, she runs into our living room, ‘catches a fish’ and then walks back into our bedroom to proudly demonstrate what she ‘caught’. Thank you Melissa & Doug.
