Besquare

If you’re an avid reader of my site you are most probably familar with my passion for making conferences and the talks that come out of it more accessible. Hence me starting CreativeMornings.

I was thrilled to find Besquare, a personal project by Craig Lockwood, featuring lots of insightful talks by leading forces in the industry.

Not everyone has the possibility to fly to conferences around the world. Besquare makes it possible for anyone to watch the talks at home. But if you happen to have the urge and moneys to go and attend a conference in person, check out his growing conference listing.

Read Craig’s post on why he started Besquare. His goal seems to become a dedicated host for all conference videos. Let’s just hope, it will stay accessible. Fingers crossed.

Leave a Mark

“I want to leave a mark in a way that helps other people to be better and if I have knowledge that can do that, I think I have to share it.”
– Jason Santa Maria

Taken from this Great Discontent Interview

Jason Santa Maria on TGD

So happy to see my studiomate Jason Santa Maria interviewed over on The Great Discontent. Jason is all kinds of wonderful; an amazing designer, layered with serious thoughtfulness and topped off with a huge heart. Oh, and he is a fantastic speaker.

Shhh… You have the opportunity to see Jason speak this coming tuesday, here in Brooklyn, October 9th, during Beyond Beta week.

Elsa – The Raclette Machine

Stadler Form released this new Raclette Grill and I am giddy over it. (Melted cheese rules my world!)

How does it work? Put a chunk of Raclette cheese on the tray, melt it, then scrape it on your place. Enjoy with soft boiled potatoes. YES!

Tinybop Blog

My studiomate Raul recently started a new kids app company called Tinybop.

Raul is an authority like no other when it comes to kids stuff. He has a keen eye and outstanding taste. I am super-excited about the launch of his Tinybop blog on which he is reviewing kids related apps, books, music and sites.

Want to find something perfect for a specific age, refine the results with the age slider on the top right.

Tinybop, the blog. Follow it!

(Unfortunately this is for US residents only. My apologies to people outside the US.)

Office Life Jargon

The Ridiculous Business Jargon Dictionary made me laugh. Just what I needed on this Monday morning! Now, go think outside the box while working on your next low decision latitude action item.

Maily is an email app for little kids that let’s them draw/write a message and then send it to a selected group of family members and friends. Cute idea. And most of all, the name Maily makes me smile.

Makeably

So, this morning I discovered CustomMade and now I just met the co-founder of Makeably, a brand new marketplace for custom creative items. Something’s in the air!

Want to get a custom cake topper? Custom kids clothes? Custom Jigsaw puzzles?

Are you a maker? Reach out to them, I think they’re looking to connect with more creatives.

Stripes!

Say it with stripes.

CustomMade.com

CustomMade connects consumers looking for fine custom home furnishings and unique goods with the skilled Makers who create them. On CustomMade you can get anything you want, custom made, just the way you want it. Fantastic idea.

Check out these galleries of book cases, custom beds and tables. Obviously I am not fond of many of the ornate designs, but, it shows that anything is possible.

How the Internet will (one day) transform government

In this TED talk, Clay Shirky shows how democracies can take a lesson from the Internet, to be not just transparent but also to draw on the knowledge of all their citizens.

Clay Shirky argues that the history of the modern world could be rendered as the history of ways of arguing, where changes in media change what sort of arguments are possible — with deep social and political implications.

Isaac Newton

When asked about which scientist he’d like to meet, Neil deGrasse Tyson said, “Isaac Newton. No question about it. The smartest person ever to walk the face of this earth. The man was connected to the universe in spooky ways. He discovered the laws of motion, the laws of gravity, the laws of optics. Then he turned 26.

Breakthrough

Alex Cornell published Breakthrough!, a book compiling strategies for combating creative block. Advice is offered by a who’s who of leading graphic designers, typographers, cartoonists, photographers, illustrators, musicians, writers, and other creative professionals.

One of the lines that stood out to me in the book, while flipping through the pages was by Ben Barry’s advice: “A deadline is always the best cure.” I agree to that. Or, take Mark Johns: “Pretend you’re an opossum!” Ha!
