A trip down memory lane for all my German Friends here. #ha

Focus Means Ignoring

“As much as I love the social web, it exhausts me. I feel like I’m constantly leaving when I’ve only just arrived. Twitter (my social media of choice) is a constant stream of surprise not unlike walking down the streets of New York City.”
– Able Parris

Focus Means Ignoring, by Able Parris

Sometimes

I fully agree with Marc Johns.

Excellence

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Have you heard this?

“I know that the molecules in my body are traceable to phenomena in the cosmos. That makes me want to grab people on the street and say: Have you HEARD THIS?”
― Neil deGrasse Tyson

Nishant Jethi created these Typographic Bird Houses. Love the idea. In fact, I would like to live in a typographic home myself.

Ray Bradbury on Optimism

INTERVIEWER: How important has your sense of optimism been to your career?

BRADBURY: I don’t believe in optimism. I believe in optimal behavior. That’s a different thing. If you behave every day of your life to the top of your genetics, what can you do? Test it. Find out. You don’t know—you haven’t done it yet. You must live life at the top of your voice! At the top of your lungs shout and listen to the echoes. I learned a lesson years ago. I had some wonderful Swedish meatballs at my mother’s table with my dad and my brother and when I finished I pushed back from the table and said, God! That was beautiful. And my brother said, No, it was good. See the difference?

Action is hope. At the end of each day, when you’ve done your work, you lie there and think, Well, I’ll be damned, I did this today. It doesn’t matter how good it is, or how bad—you did it. At the end of the week you’ll have a certain amount of accumulation. At the end of a year, you look back and say, I’ll be damned, it’s been a good year.

The SlingShot

The SlingShot is a sweet looking stabilizing grip for your phone that also folds out into a tripod. No doubt, MacGyver would probably use it.

Google Maps On iOS 6

I overheard a painful Studiomates conversation this morning about how bad the iOS 6 Maps app is and how everyone that upgraded to iOS 6 misses Google Maps. Apparently Google has promised to come to the rescue by releasing a standalone iPhone app. But until then there’s a work-around that will tie you over:

If you have iOS 6 on your phone, point your Safari browser to maps.google.com and click the export button in the middle of the menu bar to save the app to your homescreen. Once installed, you’ll now see “Google Maps” on your homescreen complete with its own appropriately designed app icon.

New Makerbot! Woohoo!

I could tell something exciting wascooking yesterday, based on Bre’s teaser Tweets. A few hours later he announced the MakerBot Replicator™ 2 Desktop 3D Printer. (that’s a mouthful, boy. SEO anyone?)

If you’re not familiar with Makerbot: The Replicator is like a mini factory for your desk that lets you build anything. A 3D printer and dream come true for anyone who likes to make things. To get a glimpse of what people are actually building with Makerbot, check out Thingiverse.

As if that wasn’t enough, Bre and his team also opened a brick and mortar store in Manhattan.

Congrats Bre and Team!

The Sill / Eley

I recently added a teeny tiny head-turner to my desk: Haworthia, a succulent native to South Africa, calling a modern triangular little vessel its home. I agree with The Sill‘s product description: The Eley may be small, but its presence is big.

A small and first attempt in bringing more greenery into my office environment. Baby steps!
