GridBooks

Whenever I begin a new web project I start with sketching. I am sure most of you agree on just how powerful this first stage of a project can be. And that’s where I like to grab one of my GridBooks. They sport a dot grid that can be divided into numerous columns and used in portrait or landscape orientations. Extremely helpful when sketching a web interface.

Get them as a pad or book.

Secret Passageway Switch

How much fun is this secret passageway switch? You can use it to activate a secret passageway (or turn on a lamp). When placed in a bookshelf, this electrical switch uses your favorite hard-bound book, without damaging it, to conceal its true function. It totally made me chuckle. It’s an idea by Ben Light who is also the force behind this Mobile that’s hanging above my desk.

LEGO: Life of George

This new LEGO app called Life of George made me look: It combines an interactive iPhone game with real LEGO bricks. Intruiging. And also, George is cute.

Horsey

Horsey‘ is an attachable bicycle ornament/accessory which makes one’s bicycle look horsey! The ‘horsey’ package includes wooden ornaments (horsey shape body), metal parts, and screws. While it probably makes a spill way more dangerous, it definitely made me smile.

♥ / Travel Hacking Cartel

A big thank you to Travel Hacking Cartel for sponsoring this week’s RSS feed!

What would you say if you could earn hundreds of thousands of Frequent Flyer miles… without getting on a plane. There is a service for that, it’s called Travel Hacking Cartel. When you become a travel hacker, you’ll start padding out your mileage accounts, then you’ll redeem them for high-value trips. The guy who started this service is Chris Guillebeau and trust me, he knows what he is talking about, as he is currently on a quest to visit *every* single country in the world.

Cartel membership is backed up by the World’s Greatest Guarantee: you’ll earn at least four free plane tickets for every year you remain a member.

11/11/11

If you didn’t realize yet, today’s a magical date, 11/11/11! I think Paul Octavious captured it perfectly in his stacked books shot.

We kicked off the day with a CreativeMornings talk with Jessi Arrington which ended with a Rainbow Parade. Pretty magical, if you ask me. You can see some photos of the parade here and here.

Oliver Jeffers x Digby & Iona

Oliver Jeffers and the folks of Digby & Iona collaborated. That’s awesome news. Together they created an incredibly adorable jewelry line for kids and kids-at-heart based on Oliver Jeffers’ childrens books characters. If these don’t make you smile then I don’t know what will.

I am so going to put that Airplane Necklace on my wishlist.

Stuck

Oliver Jeffers, one of my (and my daughter’s) favorite children’s book illustrators, just released a new book. It’s called Stuck. It’s about a determined little boy who wants to get his stuck kite out of a tree. How? Well, by knocking it down with his shoe, of course. But strangely enough, it too gets stuck. And the only logical course of action . . . is to throw his other shoe. Only now it’s stuck! Surely there must be something he can use to get his kite unstuck. An orangutan? A boat? His front door? Yes, yes, and yes. And that’s only the beginning. Ordered!

Bicycle Art Print

This bicycle print caught my eye in today’s krrb newsletter. You can find it here and here.

CreativeMornings Video: Kate Bingaman Burt

Our speaker at the first CreativeMornings/Portland was the lovely and talented Kate Bingaman Burt . A big thank you to the chapter host, Tsilli Pines for kicking off the Portland chapter with a big bang!

Mixel

Introducing Mixel for iPad from Mixel App on Vimeo.

My friend Khoi Vinh just launched his latest project, it’s called Mixel, an iPad App that lets you make, share and remix collages in a whole new way. Read about it on his site.

www.mixel.cc

UPDATE: Had the chance to play around with the app a bit tonight and I’d like to say just so much: My daughter (5) would go gaga over this app and I’d like to use it with her and let her play with photos she takes, or just photos of us, our family. But I don’t feel comfortable with the fact that my uploads will be visible and free to grab for everyone. I realize that this is their first iteration of Mixel. I hope that Khoi and his team will figure out a way to have private image libraries. Oh the fun that could be had.

Mobile UI Patterns

The site mobile-patterns.com features collections of mobile interfaces. Fantastic (growing) resource for UI designers. Created by NYC based graphic designer Mari Sheibley.
