Average Font

Average Font by Mortiz Resl shows what a font would look like if it consisted of all typefaces installed on his system. Every character from a to z is drawn using every single font with a low opacity. In total there are over 900 typefaces in his library. And, he didn’t exclude the ‘ugly’ ones.

The Average Font is typographic poetry.

Social Gift

Social Gift is a fantastic idea and takes the headache out of social-group-gift-giving!

SocialGift.com allows friends and family to chip in on bigger, better and more meaningful gifts. It’s perfect for Birthday gifts, weddings, bar mitzvahs, graduations, and any special event you can think of where you want to bring together a group of people.

Sensu, an iPad Brush

Here’s a Kickstarter project that made me look: The team behind Sensu is trying to bring a true painting experience to your iPad.

They developed Sensu out of their desire to have an authentic brush to use with our favorite drawing and painting apps on iPhone and iPad. And smart: When closed the Sensu brush reveals a useful rubber stylus tip.

Cool idea, no?

German Military Utensil Set

This German Military Surplus Utensil Set is impressive. It even entails a bottle opener.

Objects With Feet

This bowl with feet, by Dylan Kendall made me chuckle. Also known as the Bowly Guy. Yes, the bowl has a blog. In fact, there’s an entire collection of feet items. A vase with feet anyone? Or what about a sugar pack caddy?

Fun.

BankSimple

I am impatiently waiting for the launch of BankSimple, a supposedly worry-free alternative to traditional personal banking. Today they allowed us a first glance at BankSimple with the below video teaser.

I can not wait to give this a go!

Music From A Dry Cleaner

I bet in Diego Stocco‘s mind there is no such thing as ‘noise’. Why? In his latest sound adventure he turns dry cleaner sounds into music.

Diego asked the owners of a local Dry Cleaner shop if he could record a piece of music by using their machines as musical instruments. He used a puff iron, press and dry cleaning machines, a washer, clothes hangers, and a bucket full of soap.

The bass and lead sounds were created from the buzzing tones coming from the conduits and engines. There are no additional sounds from any traditional or electronic instruments.

Hat tip!

(thank you Diego)

Timber

G and I are currently researching dining tables and I just fell in love with this beauty called Timber by Julian Kyhl. It consists of 10 massive wood parts and is held together by its own weight. Smart!.

If enough people pre-order it there’s a chance it might go into production.

Retirement Facitlity Signage

This is not your usual wayfinding system. Hat tip to Tina Staeheli for designing this refreshing, minimal signage system for a (fancy) Swiss retirement home.

Misfits

I love the graphics of this vintage game called Misfits. I discovered it in the Flickr stream of Pillipat.

Andrew B. Myers

These bold, colorful photographs by Andrew B. Myers stopped me in my tracks.

YES NO

I am a big fan of all things Markus Raetz. The fact that he now made a Typographic Illusion Scultpure makes me swoon.

This Book Club Tote made me laugh!

Brooklyn Brainery

Brooklyn Brainery offers community-driven classes on anything and everything. Anyone can teach–you just need a passion for the topic and a desire to share it with others. Here are some of their current classes that made me look: Cutting Hair, Design for non designers, Foreign Alphabets and Beginning Calligraphy.

Love that they are right down the street from my house. The concept of learning by people in my community makes me so happy. Somebody warn my kids, I just signed up for the Cutting Hair class.

Magic Skateboard

My studiomate Jessi is hands-down the most color loving and creative person I know. That being said, I wasn’t necessarily surprised with her plans of wanting to paint a skateboard in rainbow colors for the Bordo Bello Fundraiser. But I was amazed at the stop motion video she created documenting the process. It put the *biggest* smile on my face today. Check this out:

CreativeMornings Video: Stewart Butterfield

Last month we launched our first Canadian CreativeMornings chapter! Hooray! Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Flickr kicked off the series in Vancouver.

The Vancouver team, led by Mark Busse, is doing a phenomenal job! A big giant thanks goes to Ryan Mah, Mahyar Saeedi and Jake Hermiston for filming and editing the talk. Here’s the video:

600,000 for charity: water

Cameron Moll just unveiled this parallaxified mini-site as part of Authentic Jobs’ 6th birthday celebration.

I am a proud member of the Authentic Job’s network and want to help raise 600,000 Ethiopian birr, roughly $35,000 USD, for charity: water. If we help charity: water reach this year’s goal, they’ll purchase a drilling rig that will eventually serve 100% of Northern Ethiopia with access to clean, safe drinking water.

Quarterly

Zach Frechette, co-founder of GOOD Magazine, just launched Quarterly, a subscription service for wonderful things. For 48h, starting now, you can sign up and take their Public Beta for a spin.

Quarterly is a subscription service that enables people to receive physical items in the mail from influential contributors of their choice. Yes, this service is about the magic of receiving physical mail.

Subscribe to a ‘Quarterly Contributor‘ and then just sit back and wait for that first surprise mailing in your mailbox. Just imagine, getting your mail after a long day at work and discovering a Quarterly surprise between all of those catalogs and bills. Lovely concept, right?

I have been a subscriber for their non-public beta and let me tell you, I felt like a kid under the christmas tree every single time I opened one of these. The current contributors are Scott Belsky, No more Dirty Looks, Liz Danzico, Alexis Madrigal, Geoff Manaugh, Maria Popova, Bobby Solomon and moi.

Keep in mind that you can subscribe to more than just one person. For now it’s US only but their plan is to add international destinations soon.

Check out the contributors. Read the about page for all the questions you might have.

The Climate Reality Project

The Climate Reality Project is happening live, all online, today until 8pm, with Al Gore speaking at 7pm. 3 million+ people have tuned in so far! You should too.

More about the Project, taken from their site:

24 Presenters. 24 Time Zones. 13 Languages. 1 Message. 24 Hours of Reality is a worldwide event to broadcast the reality of the climate crisis. It will consist of a new multimedia presentation created by Al Gore and delivered once per hour for 24 hours, representing every time zone around the globe. Each hour people living with the reality of climate change will connect the dots between recent extreme weather events — including floods, droughts and storms — and the manmade pollution that is changing our climate. We will offer a round-the-clock, round-the-globe snapshot of the climate crisis in real time. The deniers may have millions of dollars to spend, but we have a powerful advantage. We have reality.
