Web font services – An Overview

My studiomate Skylar just shared an interesting resource: An Overview of Web Font Services.

Sylvia Egger was researching Web Font Services and couldn’t find an easy way to compare them, so she created a page listing all the variables. She notes that this is a personal driven overview and should not be understood as an authoritative attempt to classify the services.

Alessi’s Light Bulbs

Here’s what happens when Alessi (and three other young designers) try to re-imagine the good old lightbulb. It made me smile.

Martin Schoeller Shoots The Time 100

Always love learning about the stories behind a photo shoot. This video is about Martin Schoeller shooting a handful of the Time 100 honorees.

♥ / Herman Miller

A big thank you to Herman Miller for sponsoring this week’s RSS feed.

You know their furniture designs; they set the tone for mid-century modern and next-century cool. That makes them right for nearly any space. Most recently, Herman Miller has turned its savvy to creating great offices for small businesses. The focus is called the Herman Miller S3 program. Think hybrid sports car. Easy on the wallet because it’s a select group of easy-to-own products. Fun because it’s fast (“from idea to installation in about 20 days”). Worth a test drive. hermanmiller.com/s3

Neche Collection

Neche Collection visually documents materials collected by Veronica Corzo-Durchardt’s grandfather Neche Eugenio Hadad, a Cuban Exile of Lebanese descent, accountant, collector and sometimes thief.

Veronica acquired many of his belongings and created the Neche Collection to be both an archive and a source of continued inspiration. The project consists of a daily photo post from the collection and each week she creates and print a limited edition screen print inspired by one or more of the objects featured in the collection that week.

The collection has a wide range of objects: printed matter, office supplies, toys, ephemera and photos. Many of the objects in the collection were sent through the mail from Cuba by her grandfather a year before they left the country.

Dance Writer

Dance Writer converts text into a choreographed sequence of poses based on the shapes of the letters, enabling users to send animated messages to their friends via email, or just enjoy the graceful movement in full Retina-quality resolution on their own displays. Absolutely stunning.

Getting Comfortable With Contracts

Mike Monteiro’s CreativeMornings talk F*** you, Pay me has been watched over 193k times over on Vimeo. Absolutely amazing!

In case you don’t have time to watch the talk, head over to Mike’s blog where he summarized his talk in a blog post: Getting Comfortable With Contracts

General Clip File

Rob Giampietro visited Studiomates this morning and in one of our conversations his General Clip File came up. It’s a Flickr set with scans of over 250 magazine clippings that he collected over the years. This will come in handy someday. Thank you Rob!

Rainbow Bank

This ‘rainbow bank’, as my reader Kirsten calls it, makes my heart beat a little bit fater. It was designed by Emmanuelle Moureaux. It’s called ‘Sugamo Shinkin Bank’, a credit union located in Shimura, Japan. Te design, an offset volume of rainbow-like layers, is the third branch designed by Moureaux, with the first two located in Tokiwadai and Niiza. Read the original designboom post.

Photographers’ Developer Trays

This series of photographs by John Cyr documenting photographer’s developer trays is beautiful and in somewhat poetic! Many more to see here.

Cat’s Cradle

I used to play this excessively as a kid. Apparently it’s called Cat’s Cradle in English. (I can’t remember what we used to call it in Swiss-German.) My favorite part of the game always the passing it on to a friend, while continuing to play. Thanks for the flash-back, Mrs. Easton.

Brooklyn Derby Party

My fab studiomates Josh, Creighton and Jessi are organizing a not-to-be-missed event called The Brooklyn Derby Party. What started as a small gathering in their apartment eight years ago has grown into a legendary event for 300 ‘closest friends’. Whether you’re in it for the ponies, the prizes, the spectacle of the hat contest, or the swagger of julep drinkers in seersucker suits, they guarantee a good time and mint juleps for all! Here are photos from 2010, 2009 and 2008.

The party is happening on may 7th, 2011 at 5pm in Brooklyn. Get your tickets!!
