Searching for the perfect vertical bike rack

Part of our current Studiomates expansion includes a small bike area. That means I am currently researching vertical bike racks, similar to the one pictured above. Anything that will let us store the most amount of bikes in a small space.

Are you a bike rack connoisseur? Do you own a vertical bike rack? Care to share your experience/knowledge in a comment below? Thank you, in the name of all the bicycle folks here at Studiomates.

Wedding Invite Love

If you’re about to get married (or recently did) you have probably googled ‘wedding invitations’ and got lost in a sea of overwhelming, badly designed wedding invitation sites. Well, there is help: WeddingInviteLove.com is a brand-new wedding invitation directory by lovely Tracy Osborn.

If you’re a wedding invitation designer, you should register on her site asap. It’s a wonderful resource for the soon-to-be-married-folks in us.

Slow Sofa

Slow Sofa, by Dutch designer Frederik Roijé, removes the need for a separate coffee table, integrating it in a single piece of furniture. It can be reconfigured in various arrangements, including a corner sofa. Parts include a table, storage, cushions and a frame support that can be used for seating or as a daybed.

Slow Sofa. Yes, please!

Desks opening up at Studiomates

Big exciting news from Studiomates headquarters: We are expanding. Starting March 1st, we will be renting out 6 more desks. The new space that we will be taking over includes a space that will allow us to host workshops. CreativeEvenings, anyone?

Our space is located in DUMBO, Brooklyn, right on the water. The picture above, with the bridge, that’s our view. For real. So, in case you’re in the market for a desk, here’s what $550 a month would get you:

– desk with drawer unit and chair
– conference room
– bike room
– internet
– laser printer
– kitchen with fridge, coffee maker, water
– a huge Ideapaint wall for brainstorming
– lots of geek talk over lunch with all of us Studiomates
(If you are looking for a space to store a lot of equipment/stuff, studiomates is not for you!)

We are a tight group of designers, developers and copywriters. Check out who we are over on our Studio site.

Do you think you’d be a good fit? Email me and tell us why! Send us a pitch, your url, stuff you’ve made on the web, or anything you think that would convince us to make you a studiomate.

The Candy Man Can

Sometimes listening to the Candy Man Song is all I need to make my day a little brighter and take my mind of looming decisions. Here we go:

Treasury Table

Every now and then I come across a piece of furniture that makes my heart beat a little faster. It just happend now, when I discovered the Treasury Table over on bltd. What a brilliant concept. It combines my love for ‘organizing things into boxes’ and minimal, clean design. A total winner in my book!

Erik Spiekermann on Gestalten.tv

The folks of gestalten.tv just pointed me to their most recent video with Erik Spiekermann. Listen to the German King of Typefaces talk about new visual languages, design processes, the analogies of music and typography.

Watch their complete line up of video interviews on gestalten.tv.

Fresh Flowers

I like this take unusual on Fresh Flowers. Definitely would make it easy to ship them overseas. Made me smile!

Designers & Books

I am thrilled about today’s launch of long anticipated Designers & Books. The site is the brainchild of my friend Steve Kroeter and was designed by no other than Pentagram.

Steve told me about the concept of the site months ago and I have been anticipating this day, where I can share his wonderful idea. Steve approached highly respected members of the the design community and asked them to send in a list of books that had an important, meaningful, and formative impact on their lives. Books that have shaped their values, their worldview, and their ideas about design.

From Vitruvius to William Morris to Frank Lloyd Wright to Edith Wharton to Le Corbusier to Paul Rand—there has always been a particularly special and robust relationship between designers and books: reading them, writing them, designing them, collecting them, learning from them, and being inspired by them. Designers & Books celebrates that relationship.

Congratulations Steve! I am raising a glass of bubbly stuff.

Little Alouette

This Little Alouette Teething Safari Block Set is handmade with love in Ohio. Reading this one line on their packaging, I couldn’t help but chuckle: Our workshop usually contains cups of tea, laughing children, and disco music, so each product will come to you infused with love and bliss! I embrace the idea of a teething toy that can also function as a decorative element or barn animal.

Heart Cake Tutorial

Valentine’s day is approaching fast. For the bakers in you, maybe this year you could surprise your Valentine with a homemade Heart Cake? Check out the Heart Cake Tutorial!

Rainbow Headboard

How incredibly charming is this rainbow headboard! Tried to find the original post over on the Tumblr blog that this Pinterest post quoted as the source. Couldn’t find it. Oy!

Knife Rack

This minimalist bamboo knife rack by Taylors Eye Witness would look good in our kitchen. Wondering if it could also be used to hold keys?

Why Knot?

I wish I would have known about Why Knot? video featuring work by Seth Goldstein last friday when my four year old asked: “Daddy, how to you make that knot in your tie?”

Boot Pull

Now that everyone in NYC seems to be walking around in boots (especially Hunter Rainboots) I think this Boot Pull would come in handy. Not that I have room for it in my apartment, but it sure would make a great conversation starter.

Make Do and Mend

I love clear messages like this one by Gail Bryson: Make Do and Mend. Or take this “Completely perfect” one. Ha!

Tolix Stool/Bedside Table

This stool/bedside table by Tolix made me look.
