Conference Table Quest

I am currently researching sleek, minimal looking conference tables for our new conference room. Ideally I’d like it to be white and foldable. I started a Conference Room Pinterest Board where I am collecting my finds.

My current favorite is the Pratt Desk. Do you happen to have any recommendations? If so, would you mind to leave them in a comment below?

More Perfect Typography

Last night kicked off what will soon be a regular talk and workshop series here at our collaborative workspace Studiomates. Tim Brown, Type Manager of Typekit, gave a fantastic talk titled “More Perfect Typography”. (Yes, it was a typographic geek fest.) In this talk, Tim guided us through using typographic tools and perspectives that will change the way we design websites.

A big thank you goes to my studiomates Mandy Brown and Jason Santa Maria for putting the event together. We didn’t tape last night’s talk but here’s the same/similar talk Tim gave at last year’s Build Conference:

NYC/CreativeMornings Video with Andrew Zuckerman

Our speaker at the november 2010 CreativeMornings was the amazingly inspiring Andrew Zuckerman. During his talk, you could literally hear jaws drop in the audience and I have never gotten as many emails right after the event saying that they left with such a desire to go home and ‘create something’. Andrew’s talk was nothing short of powerful. And I am delighted to see that he has since been asked to be speak at this year’s 99% conference, because one of the Behance folks was attending and equally impressed. Please enjoy, Andrew Zuckerman’s talk:

A big giant thank you to Sy Abudu for offering her video and editing skills.

Slot-in Bookcase

Shoebox Dwelling is officially one of my new favorite blogs. The Slot-In Bookcase they posted today made me gasp. German designer Florian Gross has created Konnex. It has all attributes I want to see in a bookcase: It is light, modular, stackable, easy to put together, fully customizable in any room, big or small. Two thumbs up!

Save as WWF

The WWF format is a PDF that cannot be printed. It’s a simple way to avoid unnecessary printing. So here’s your chance to save trees and help the environment. Decide for yourself which documents don’t need printing out – then simply save them as WWF.

Sounds pretty awesome: Just save it as WWF. What a smart move, WWF!

(thanks Jens!)

The Rolyats 2010

Those of you that have attended one of my talks know that I have a fabulously eccentric aunt, called Hugi. I assure you, the rest of my family is rather normal. I just discovered the below video of a family that I would gladly be part of. What? Your family doesn’t dance around the garage in costumes at midnight Christmas Eve?

An Apartment for Space-Age Lovers

If I lived on my own this is how I would want to live. Completely clutter-free. No visual noise whatsoever. The owners of this sleek NYC apartment wanted a place where every boot and book, every single little thing could be hidden away; they wanted something that would make the most out of their 715 square feet.

I especially love (!) the concept of the friendly Black Hole, a flexible zone which can be annexed to the living room or bedroom, or optionally kept closed as a large walk-through closet space depending on the needs. It’s big enough to gobble up anything they need to hide.

Hat tip off to Dash Marshall, the architect/designer.

(I know, I know some of you might say that this is too sterile! Live and let Live!)

Tea Bag Infuser

This reusable tea-bag-shaped infuser easily fills with loose tea and is made of stainless steel with a wire and a silicone base and tag. Designed by Claus Jensen and Henrik Holbaek. Made me smile!

Box Light

Box Light is a lamp that can be manually adjusted by sliding the box open or closed. Lovely! Designed by Jonas Hakaniemi.

The Future of Art

The Future of Art from KS12 on Vimeo.

What are the defining aesthetics of art in the networked era? How is mass collaboration changing notions of ownership in art? How does micropatronage change the way artists produce and distribute artwork? The Future of Art begins a conversation on these topics and invites your participation.

This video was shot, edited and screened at the Transmediale festival 2011 in Berlin, Germany.

Work / Play Table

I am starting to have a new obsession: Multifunctional Tables and Desks. Take this table called Doppelleben. As its name suggests, it has a ‘double life’: Play on top, work below. The tabletop consists of two layers. If you need to use the lower layer, you can slide two lightweight panels down the sides. And when the work is done (or is safe to be interrupted), the panels come up creating a surface for dining and entertaining. This working/dining combo is merely a suggestion, of course. You can use the lower layer tabletop as a bookshelf, a utensil storage, a display for your collectables, or in any way you see fit.

Smart? YES!

CloudApp

CloudApp allows you to share images, links, music, videos and files. Here is how it works: choose a file, drag it to the menubar and let them take care of the rest. CloudApp provides you with a short link automatically copied to your clipboard that you can use to share your upload with co-workers and friends. Additionally you can view, track and delete files right from your menubar. it doesn’t get much easier. Impressive.

Haters Gonna Hate

We absolutely need one of these Haters Gonna Hate prints here in our studio. Hat tip to Omar Noory for making us smile and reminding us that Haters Gonna Hate. (Watch the little guy strutt)

mutatoprints

The Mutato-Archive is a collection of non-standard fruits, roots and vegetables, displaying a dazzling variety of forms, colors and textures. The complete absence of botanical anomalies in our supermarkets has caused us to regard the consistency of produce presented there as natural. Produce has become a highly designed, monotonous product. We have forgotten, and in many cases never experienced, the way fruits, roots, and vegetables can actually look (and taste). The Mutato-Project by Uli Westphal serves to document, preserve and promote these last remainders of agricultural diversity.

I have written about Mutatoes before and am happy to announce that Uli now sells a poster of his fabulous project. Wouldn’t this look great in a kitchen? YES!
