Ryan McGinness

Ryan McGinness is interested in creating a new vocabulary for everyday symbols and icons through context and composition. Using layering, repetition, and juxtaposition, his complex pieces construct worlds within worlds. With his massively intricate silk-screened paintings, sculptures, and installations, hes able to blur the division between design, pop culture, and fine art. Ryan McGinnesss artwork has appeared in numerous books, magazines, and exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe.

swiss felt door handle protector

umgewohntumgewohntumgewohnt

Here’s a product that made me look: Umgewohnt, a switzerland based company, produced these awesome felt door/window handle protectors. Just slip them on your door or window handle and voila, no more slamming of the door and making dents into the wall. Beautiful and practical. Here’s a list of stores that carries them. (But man, they need a better web presence!)

Sled Coffee Table and Rug

sled coffee table and rug

Sledding was a huge part of my swiss upbringing, so it comes to no surprise that this Sled Coffee Table and Rug made me smile. A Coffee table that interacts with its Rug, the coffee table is in the shape of a traditional child’s sled and sits neatly into a thick pile rug with two deep groves cut into it, giving the impression of compressed snow under the weight of the skis.

Google Voice with your existing number

You now can get Google Voice with a Google number OR with your existing mobile phone number. If you choose to use Google Voice with your existing number, you won’t get some features (like call screening and recording), but you’ll still get many others — including Google voicemail:

If you already have a Google number, this new feature should also help with the transition to your new number, as you can now forward unanswered calls to your mobile phone to your Google Voice account. This way, people who still call your old number will reach the same voicemail as people who call your Google Voice number.

If you already use Google Voice, you can add Google voicemail to any mobile phone you’ve linked to your account. If you’re not using Google Voice yet, you can request an invitation or ask someone with a Google Voice account to invite you. When you receive the invitation to sign-up, you decide whether you’d like to use Google Voice with your existing number or get a Google number.

Last summer, Felice Varini did this installation called “Cercle et suite d’éclats” in Vercorin, Switzerland. I agree with Pieter of TodayAndTomorrow, the scale of this point of view artwork is very impressive.

Piniwini Bookshelf

Piniwini is a small wall-mounted peg that works like a shelf for books, magazines, CDs and DVDs. The ingenious patented design makes it look as though they are perfectly balanced on top of the peg!

Frozen In Time

(Caution, might not be considered safe for work in certain working environments:)

Frozen In Time, Switzerland is a fascinating project by photographer Nathalie Daoust. These surreal, dreamlike images began as black and white photographs, taken with a pinhole camera, then hand-colored.through life experiences, loss and sorrow as well as pleasure.

Mini Suitcases

These Mini Suitcases are fantastic. A cool way to store small toys in your kid’s room. In fact, I am tempted to buy a few for our studio!

Chocolate Bar Magnet

chocolate bar magnet

The chocoholic in me chuckled when seeing this Chocolate Bar Magnet. Like a real chocolate bar you can break it into 15 pieces to be used individually or combined in any way you like. (Of course, be careful if you have little kids around, we know, that magnets are superdangerous when swallowed!)

Grocery Store Musical

For Improv Everywhere’s latest mission, six undercover actors burst into song in a grocery store in Queens. Three minutes and lots of silly choreography later, they returned to their roles as shoppers and stock boys. The mission was filmed with hidden robotic, lipstick, and wearable cameras. Enjoy the video first and then go behind the scenes with on their site.

CreativeMornings with Zachary Lieberman at SVA

creativemorning_full

It’s CreativeMorning week here on planet swissmiss!

Our speaker at this friday’s CreativeMornings, October 30th, 2009, is brilliant and much admired Zachary Lieberman. Zachary has a simple goal: he wants you surprised. He creates artwork that uses technology in a playful and seamless way to explore the nature of communication and the delicate boundary between the visible and the invisible.

Recently, he helped create visuals for the facade of the new Ars Electronica Museum, wrote software for an augmented reality card trick, and helped develop a 3d drawing tool, a car driven typeface and an open source eye tracker to help a paralyzed graffiti artist draw again. In addition to making artistic work, Lieberman is a co-creator of openframeworks, a toolkit for creative coding and teaches at Parsons School of Design. (If your head is not spinning at this point, I don’t know what will!)

Interested in attending? Make sure to r.s.v.p via email quickly as we usually fill up within an hour. Please tell us your name and what industry you’re in. (Check your inbox for a confirmation email!) CreativeMornings start at 8.30am, end at 10am and are FREE of charge. I am sorry but we’ve reached full capacity!

A big thank you to Liz Danzico and her team at the MFA in Interaction Design Program at SVA for hosting our October CreativeMorning.

NEW: Be the first to know when r.s.v.p’s open up, follow CreativeMornings on twitter!

Check out pictures of previous CreativeMornings over at Flickr.

Breakfast will be generously sponsored by OPS Divina a NYC based design, web applications and multimedia communications firm.

Mix My Granola

mixmygraonla

Being swiss, I am a lover of all things Muesli/Granola. I was excited to discover MixMyGranola, a service that let’s you customize your very own Granola mix. Here’s how it works: First choose one of the four granolas. Then continue on to their large selection of fruits, nuts, seeds, and extras to create a mix the way you like it. And voila, the cool tube shaped container is then being shipped right to your house. What’s not to love?
