Largest Bankruptcies in History

Largest Bankrupties chart

Last week, General Motors began the fourth largest bankruptcy proceedings in history, joining the many other large and venerable companies that have sunk to the bottom during this economic crisis. In fact, eight of the 20 largest bankruptcies have happened during the last two years of crisis. GOOD Magazine’s latest Transparency is a look at the biggest sinking ships in business history.

Numbers: A Silent Auction to Benefit the TDC Scholarship Fund

This Thursday, there will be an auction of posters (designed by James Victore, Strange Attractors, Deb Bishop, Matteo Bologna, and Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich to name a few) at the Type Directors Club. Each of them will be auctioned off on 11 June 2009 (6 pm), with proceeds to benefit the TDC Scholarship fund. That’s right! You can own a little piece of design history, and support design education in the bargain. The posters will be on view at the Club from 21 May to 11 June, 2009.

Because of AIGA

AIGA wants to hear how being a member has benefitted you. Whether it’s been personally, as a company, or as part of your community. They would love to see you flex your creative muscles on the first one by limiting your first answer to 5 words or less. (Extreme-Twitter-Style) Brilliant! Because of AIGA…

Divers Float

Diver's Float

Is it a giant orange? A punching bag? No, It’s a Divers Float. Divers tie the line off to a rope attached to their boat and use the line to hold onto before they dive and also as a marker when they are diving. You can’t miss the bright orange from under the sea. If you are not a diver I am not sure exactly what you can do with it besides admire and like it and think about going diving. Why not?

Never Sleep Book

Never Sleep BookNever Sleep Book

Here’s a book that made me look: Never Sleep: Graduating to Graphic Design:

There is a major disconnect between the life of a design student and the transition to being a design professional. To demystify the transition, we share the failures, successes, and surprises during our years in college and progression into the field: the creative process, monetary problems, internships, interviews, mistakes, and personal relationships. We include the work from our first design class to our most current client work, along with side stories and interviews from our mentors, teachers, and peers. This book will serve as the ultimate companion for design students, educators, and anyone breaking into a creative field.

At the combined age of forty-six, Andre Andreev and Dan Covert have been recognized by I.D., BDA, Communication Arts, PRINT, Graphis, Metropolis, the Type Directors Club, The Art Directors Club, CMYK, HOW, Adobe, STEP Field Guide to Emerging Design Talent, and Young Guns. They met while studying graphic design at California College of the Arts and currently work for MTV’s on-air design department in New York, while operating their firm dress code at night. They also co-teach typography and design courses at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Andre eats no meat, Dan dislikes puppies.

The Continental Crawler Continues

The Continental Crawler: “Lost Lake” Season 2, Episode 5 from Michael Cogliantry on Vimeo.

The Continental Crawler is a video series created by my friends Michael Cogliantry and Jen Cogliantry, two ex-New Yorkers new to the Pacific Northwest. Channeling their inner-outdoors-people for the first time in years, they hit the road Lucy and Ricky style in a 1958 travel trailer found on Ebay. Past video episodes and travel photography from the lower 48 states (and the great nation of Canada) on such outdoor subjects as fire-making, cheese-curd tasting and high-altitude cooking can be found here on their blog.

The changing face of every day design

Changing Every Day Design

The Guardian created this at-a-glance grid to show the design evolution of everyday items. From air steward uniforms to Corn Flakes cereal boxes…how has everyday design evolved over the last half-century?

Traffic Jam Art Installation Staged in the Mountains

Traffic Jam Art InstallationTraffic Jam Art Installation

In 2005, artist Maider López put the call out for willing participants to create an intentional car cluster muck in the Aralar Mountains. In response, more than 400 folks drove up to the countryside in 160 vehicles to get stuck. The result: an unexpected invasion to illustrate the automobile’s impact on the landscape. This made me smile.

CreativeMornings with Khoi Vinh

Khoi Speaking at CreativeMornings

Last friday was one packed CreativeMornings, I am not surprised because it was clearly a perfect combination of speaker (Khoi Vinh), space (Meet at the Apartment) and breakfast sponsor (MailChimp).

Everyone seemed to have showed up even though it was a rainy morning. Hat tip to all my loyal attendees!

A big two thumbs up to the hosts Sara and Marc Schiller and their team. They once again were *incredibly* organized, gracious and generous with opening the doors to their truly fantastic space on Crosby street. Make sure to spread the word about Meet at the Apartment: You can rent it for your events and it is by far the most amazing meeting space I have ever seen. Business meetings/workshops don’t have to be in a dull environment, really!

Khoi’s talk was amusing, insightful and honest. He was talking about the fact that everything he knows about design he learned in the 90s. He took a look at how his designer’s early attitudes and assumptions about how design works have weathered the past fifteen years, for better or worse. He showed us some of his early works, that made him cringe and made us all feel better knowing, that he wasn’t just born with his beautiful amazing design sense. We all have to work hard for it, don’t we? One of his last slides sums up his major talking points:

1. Tell The Truth
2. Understand the problem
3. Don’t Skimp
4. Fads are bad
5. Let things be what they are
6. A little bit of self-delusion goes a long way

We will post a video of the talk soon. Hang tight! See pictures of the event here.

I truly enjoyed perusing everyone’s answer on the conversation-starter-tags, which asked the question: “What can you teach me?” See all the diverse answers here.

A big thank you also to brave soul Naz Hamid for virtually joining us at a very early hour San Francisco time. Naz is the force behind Weightshift. He is an amazing designer and obviously, a morning person! Here’s what it looked like from his side of the screen:

And here’s some good news for all my swiss readers that would like to attend one of my CreativeMornings: The July event will take place in Zurich, Switzerland. Sit tight, more info coming soon!

Hooray in the Center.
