There is nothing funny about design

There's nothing funny about design cover

Here’s my latest read that had me miss subway stops: There’s Nothing Funny About Design by David Barringer. David’s articles, which have appeared in publications from Print to Emigre, are notable for his strong personal point of view, literary style, and even humor, not always attributes associated with writing about design. In this collection of essays, Barringer’s first, he wonders why drug names have so many X’s in them, ponders the rise of gory DVD covers, and ruminates on his father’s business card collection, pythons, and the human skull—proving again and again that design is everywhere you look for it (but may not have seen), without the powerful magnifying lens of this talented and exciting observer and writer.

Kikkerland

Kikkerland Booth

Kikkerland’s ‘can’ booth as it affectionately came to be known by ICFF attendees and other exhibitors was built out of almost 3000 cans of Campbell’s Tomato, Cream of Mushroom, and Chicken Noodle Soup that now have been donated to City Harvest. A big two thumbs up to Kikkerland for such an inventive booth and good cause.

Custom Letter Pillow

Laura makes custom crocheted Pillows. They are approximately 15 inches tall and awesome. Ella’s head would explode if she had a red E. Just yesterday, she peeked her head out of her room (at bedtime) and said: “Mom, I need an E!” She ran into the living room and looked for an E in a puzzle we have.

Don’t you sometimes feel like you need an “E” or maybe an “M”?

SpatialKey

SpatialKey is an Information Visualization, Mapping, Analysis and Reporting System. It is designed to help organizations quickly assess location based information critical to their organizational goals, decision making processes and reporting requirements. (Ok, that ‘unlock your data’ slogan is just a tad bit too cheesy for my taste)

Technorama Facade by Ned Khan

In 2002, Ned Kahn worked with the staff of Technorama, the major science center in Switzerland, and their architects, Durig and Rami, to create a facade for the building which is composed of thousands of aluminum panels that move in the air currents and reveal the complex patterns of turbulence in the wind.

ICFF 09 | My Personal Highlight: ergoErgo

ergoErgo

My personal favorite of this year’s ICFF was the ergoErgo by Alan Heller. I am a big believer in ‘active sitting’ and used to sit on a big gymnastics ball all through my university years. Why not here in my studio? I couldn’t find a red yoga/gymanstics ball. Can you imagine how I was rejoicing to discover ergoErgo that comes in bright orangy/red? How perfect for our studio!

ICFF 09 | Geneva

Geneva Stereo

The Geneva Booth was packed when I got there. It looked (and sounded) fantastic. I admit, I was surprised how much I liked the Geneva Sound Home Theatre, I had never seen it in person. They also introduced the brandnew Walnut Series. A beauty!

ICFF 09 | Loadbearing

Loadbearing Shelves

Every year I walk up to the Loadbearing booth, wondering: When will I ever have one of these fantastic shelves in my studio or home? And if this was Twitter I’d hashtag it #most_awesome_shelving_system ever.
